5 Ways to Beat Autumn Aches and Stiffness
October brings cooler mornings, darker evenings and crunchy leaves underfoot. It can also bring something far less welcome: stiff joints, achy muscles and that general feeling of tightening up as the cold sets in.
The good news is that a few simple habits can make a real difference to how your body copes with the change in season.
1. Keep Moving
When it’s cold and grey outside, it’s tempting to hunker down and move less. But staying active is one of the best things you can do for your joints and muscles over the colder months. Even a brisk 20-30 minute walk each day can improve your circulation and ease stiffness.
Osteo tip: Warm up properly before exercising in cold weather. Cold muscles are much more prone to injury, so give yourself five minutes of gentle movement first.
2. Layer Up Sensibly
Keeping your muscles warm genuinely helps, particularly if you already have back, neck or shoulder problems. Dress in layers so you can adapt as the temperature changes through the day, and take extra care to keep your lower back and neck covered when you’re outside.
3. Watch Out for Wet Leaves and Uneven Ground
Autumn is beautiful, but it comes with hazards underfoot. Wet leaves on pavements and paths can be surprisingly slippery. Wear shoes with good grip, take your time on steps and slopes, and keep your hands free where you can so you’re able to steady yourself.
4. Don’t Sit Still for Too Long
Darker evenings often mean more time on the sofa or at a desk. Try to get up and move around at least once an hour, and stretch your back, neck and hips regularly.
5. Book an Autumn MOT
If your body is already feeling the effects of the colder weather, now is a great time to book in. Osteopathic treatment can help release tension, improve mobility and prepare your body for the months ahead.
