Osteopathy

Paul and Sam Middlehurst

WHAT IS OSTEOPATHY?

"Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment which emphasises methods of recognising and alleviating structural and mechanical problems of the body." (Lord Walton, House of Lords, Second Reading of the Osteopaths Bill, 27.5.93).

Osteopathy is the science of human mechanics. It is an established and widely recognised system of diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of conditions, caused by both structural and physiological imbalances.

STRUCTURAL OSTEOPATHY

The neuro-musculo-skeletal system is the largest system in the human body, constructed of muscles, bone, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and neurological components that co-ordinate the whole system. The neuro-musculo-skeletal system is what enables us to express our thoughts and emotions. All other systems, it could be said, exist merely to enable the continuing function of the neuro-musculo-skeletal system. The cardiovascular, digestive, circulatory, and neurological systems enable optimal function and coordination for the movement and operation of the neuro-musculo-skeletal system. Correct mechanical functioning of this system, therefore, is essential.

Osteopathy ensures harmony and balance to minimise energy expenditure and wear and tear of this system. In particular, it is concerned with the inter-relationship between the structure of the body and the way in which it functions and is therefore an appropriate form of therapy for many problems affecting the neuro-musculo-skeletal system. However, Osteopaths use a wide variety of approaches to treatment and can bring relief or improvement to many conditions affecting, for example, children, the elderly, sportsmen and women, or to problems which arise during or after pregnancy.

Whilst Osteopathy has become "famous" for rapidly resolving low back pain it is a body wide system. In the UK alone over 20,000 people, every working day, benefit from Osteopathic treatment for a myriad of conditions.

Osteopathy is effective for a wide range of structural conditions including:

  • Lower and upper back pain
  • Sciatica
  • Sports Injuries and reduced performance
  • Trapped nerves
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Tennis/Golfers elbow
  • Neck pain
  • Whiplash
  • Headaches
  • Occupational Strain
  • Joint pain/ dysfunction - wrists, hips, knees, ankles etc.
  • Arthritis
  • Postural problems

The treatment aims to:

  • Restore homeostasis and equilibrium
  • Restore muscle and joint function
  • Improve and maintain flexibility
  • Reduce muscle spasm
  • Maintain nerve supply
  • Improve circulation

OSTEOPATHY for PREGNANCY

Pregnancy is responsible for significant changes in the body in a relatively short period of time, posturaly, hormonally and emotionally. This can give rise to a number of symptoms that are amenable to Osteopathic treatment:

  • Low back and leg pain
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Indigestion
  • Breathing difficulties
  • General aches and pains

OSTEOPATHY for PREPARATION for LABOUR

It is important to ensure the mother's pelvis is structurally balanced to allow easier descent of the baby down the birth canal.

You may be advised on positions for labour to help prevent back problems later.

POSTNATAL OSTEOPATHY

After delivery it is advised that mother and child return for structural examination and treatment if necessary.

After giving birth the body has to recover from the changes it made during pregnancy, the delivery, and subsequently caring for a baby. Activities such as carrying car seats, nursing in poor positions and bending over a cot can place enormous strain on the body.

CRANIAL OSTEOPATHY

Cranial Osteopathy is a refined and subtle Osteopathic technique using gentle manipulative pressure to encourage the release of tensions throughout the head and body. The Osteopath's highly trained sense of touch is used to identify and correct mechanical disturbances and limitations, both in and around the joints for the skull, and throughout the body.

This is particularly appropriate for treating babies and children for a variety of problems including:

  • Colic
  • Feeding Difficulties
  • Glue Ear
  • Irritable Baby Syndrome
  • Sleeping Difficulties
  • Sinusitis
  • Behavioural Problems

For adults Cranial Osteopathy can help a range of problems including:

  • Migraines
  • Sinusitis
  • Dizziness
  • Tinnitus
  • Digestive Problems

OSTEOPATHIC TREATMENT

The initial consultation will involve a detailed case history and examination.

You will normally be asked to undress to your underwear, and to perform a series of movements so your posture may be assessed. Then using palpation, points of excessive strain or weakness may be identified. A diagnosis will then be made and a treatment plan will be initiated.

The treatment may consist of soft tissue massage techniques, manipulation of joints, adjustment of posture, and health education, including prescribing exercises.

Osteopathy is patient centred, which means the treatment is geared to you as an individual.

OSTEOPATHIC REGULATION

The Statutory Register of the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) opened on 9 May 1998. The title "Osteopath" became protected by law from 9 May 2000. As a result it is a criminal offence to describe oneself as an Osteopath in the UK unless registered with the GOsC.

Only practitioners meeting the high standards of safety and competency and with the highest level of training are eligible to join this register.

The GOsC regulates, promotes and develops the profession of Osteopathy, maintaining a Statutory Register of those entitled to practise Osteopathy.

OSTEOPATHY and PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE

Many private health insurance schemes provide cover for Osteopathic treatment. Paul & Sam are registered with all the major companies, including BUPA and Axa PPP.
